The acquisition of two large residential parcels on both sides of the Millcreek waterway presented a unique opportunity to create an iconic city park in a town that has very little undeveloped open spaces left for new park creation.

Local citizens were very concerned about what would become of the land. Because of local interest, MGB+A orchestrated an in-depth public input process, including meetings and web-based surveys, to provide citizens with ample opportunity to be involved and help direct the design of the new park.

The master plan conveys the essence of the citizens’ vision for the parcels. The plan includes an incredible two-level playground with specialized equipment for special needs children, a 14’ high tower, multiple climbing nets, and natural-looking climbing boulder intended to mimic the locally-famous “Elephant Rock.” The park’s plans also include multiple picnic pavilions, an extensive trail system that connects the park to the larger pedestrian network, and a custom pedestrian bridge over Millcreek. Another component of the project involved the restoration of woodland areas and the harmonious juxtaposition of riparian and upland species.
